I've been going crazy the last month or so, trying to figure out a way to go to Comic-Con. It was about as easy as getting the Babel Fish, but I refused to give up, and earlier today, I finally put the junk mail on top of the satchel.
I am actually going to Comic-Con this year!
I'll be there from Thursday, July 24 until Saturday, July 26. I'm on a publishing panel with Pocketbooks on Thursday called "Star Trek without a blueprint." I'll be there representing volume three of the Star Trek manga, which I think comes out next week.
This is an exciting time for Star Trek, filled with uncertainty and opportunity. I think it's safe to say that there's a lot riding on the new movie, and how it fares will likely affect all of the ancillary Star Trek markets, like conventions, novels, comics, manga, etc.* I don't know if that's what "without a blueprint" means, but if it does, it'll be an interesting conversation. (Of course, it could also mean that CBS is giving much more freedom to people who want to create within the Star Trek universe, rather than forcing them to adhere to a pretty narrow blueprint. That will also be an interesting conversation. My point is that it's going to be interesting, and certainly worth the price of hotel, airline travel, and all the other expenses associated with coming to the show just to watch a one hour panel before you turn around and go right back home.**)
The rest of the show, I'll be set up with my friend Rich and his partners in crime***, who are letting me crash their booth. We haven't finalized my signing schedule, but once we do (and I know the name and number of their booth) I'll update this post.
This will be the only convention I'm attending this summer other than PAX, so I'm really, really excited and grateful that Marco from TokyoPop, and Rich and his partners from awesomeland were able to help me thwart the cleaning robots.
* I remember hearing, during a negotiation for a convention some years ago, that Enterprise was doing so poorly with the fans that it had really hurt convention turnout. I don't know if that's true or not, but I heard it so many times from so many different people, it was either a well-worn talking point or legit. If the new movie doesn't do as well as everyone hopes, we could be hearing about the death of Star Trek again, though I've come to believe that Star Trek is a mighty zombie in science fiction that simply can't be killed. There's a good reason it's still relevant and inspiring to legions of fans forty years after it debuted, you know.
** This statement is completely false. Except for the interesting part. It's absolutely going to be interesting. Also, "interesting."
***I'm not sure if Rich has minions, but if he does, I'm sure that they will be there, too. Hey, maybe I'll fill out a minion application!

( WOW! BANG! )

Gilberto Gil has released more than 50 albums in his career -- the latest is "Banda Larga Cordel," which came out this month. That puts him about 45 ahead of Devendra Banhart, but the Brazilian musical icon, 65, and the Los Angeles-based folk-rock eccentric share a passion for eradicating distinctions among musical genres, as they'll demonstrate when they play at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday as part of the KCRW World Festival series.
Gil, who also has served as Brazil's minister of culture since 2003, made a crusade of eclecticism when he spearheaded the Tropicalia movement in the 1960s, and his intoxicating example resonates in the free-spirited approach of Banhart. The 27-year-old son of an American father and a Venezuelan mother might come off as an innocent, but in a conference call with Gil he showed that he's a serious student of his hero, and of South American music overall.

Juno sure was memorable. The Ellen Page movie was like a sentimental favorite to win last year's Oscars. Although it didn't happen, the film about teenage pregnancy raised awareness about the alarming rise in the trend, statistics wise. But Juno has been out of the theaters for some time now and for an issue as crucial as something that can wreck lives instantly, maybe the American audience needs constant reminder.
For its part, the premiere of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, the ABC Family drama that tackles the topic head on, broke records by becoming the network's most watched series, attracting 2.8 million viewers and, of special attention, to the 18 - 49 demographics.
In an interview with Fanbolt, Shailene Woodley, 16, who plays the central character in the series Amy Juergens, shared that she has no problems representing the issue of teen pregnancy, as she believes it is of utmost importance, not to mention being a teenager herself.
“So far I've done a PSA saying how teen pregnancy is preventable and how parents and teenagers can handle it … I want to express my feelings on teen pregnancy and how girls can be helped and how they can realize that they're not alone in this situation... by bringing it up again we're able to stir up different emotions and different feelings and different controversies and be able to put it in terms that are understandable for everybody.”
Moreover, Woodley hopes that The Secret Life of the American Teenager can affect change in terms of how parents view the lives of their teenage sons and daughters.
“I think parents should watch it, too … because Adrian's mom on the show, she has no idea what her daughter is doing half the time, so I think it's important for parents to be able to realize that when they leave for a week their teens aren't necessarily studying for algebra, they're doing something else. So I think it's important to open parents' eyes all around America.”

'proof is in the pudding', as Shakespeare said...
hmmm, what play/sonnet is that from?

Well, I was almost having a really nice day... I got a shipment of these gorgeous flowers, and I was thinking "finally, something pretty and normal and non-dangerous," but just as I was reaching into the crate to pick one up, I got a frantic phone call from Dr. Singh telling me to keep them under lock and key and to call her immediately if they showed any signs of change.

So, yeah, looks like we have another evolving item on our hands. If you can handle a little danger, Padmavati's Lotus really is quite beautiful. I'd take one home myself, but I'm not a big fan of sleeping with one eye open.
You can buy Padmavati's Lotus now in the Gaia Cash Shop, along with plenty of other neat items. Come have a look!
OF
THE CELEBRITY SOUNDTRACK CONTEST
YES, its BACK! We're doing it again! As you remember, this is a contest where you make up basically a mix tape based on a Celebrity's life along with the cover art. Here is the example from last time:
Conan O'Brien's soundtrack title: Fighting Ladies (Off With a Stick)
After this I would list the songs on the album, like I might have "Big Pimpin" by Jay Z. Then I'd say why, like "Conan is a total babe magnet and a pimp."
I will be making a submission post on THURSDAY JULY 10TH at 7pm EST. That post will be screened, so no one will see your submission. Please don't use your last submission unless you think it was a GROSS OVERSIGHT that we didnt pick it. The contest will be CLOSED on TUESDAY JULY 15TH AT 7PM EST. And a voting post will follow that in the next day or two.
If you still don't understand the contest, go here to see the last version of it. And here are the winners. Amazing stuff, I think.
Prize? Well there is no SPONSORED prize, so basically, I'll whip up a box of amazing things I can find. Sound crappy? Then gtfo >:O lol <3 <3 It will be made with love. Not sure how many winners yet.
If you have QUESTIONS, post them here. If not, then get back to celebrating ONTD's Birthday :D

Here is the first trailer for the new 50 Cent video game, 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand
Here is the plot:
50 and his buddies fly to some vague Middle Eastern country to play a benefit concert, get stiffed for their payment (a diamond-encrusted skull, no less), and end up embroiled in a massive firefight with several warring factions over the aforementioned bling. Along the way, expect plenty of pithy quips (all recorded by 50 and his posse) and, according to the producer, perhaps even a little romance (50 falls for a shorty in a burka?). Are the G-Unit guys in over their heads when it comes to dabbling in international conflict? Probably, but it's definitely a fun and unexpected "fish out of water" turn for Curtis & Co. to take. "Basically, just expect a fun crime story," Blean says. "Think of it as Three Kings meets Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels."

I must say I'm not a fan of Rihanna but they had great chemistry together. Bisbal is just so dreamy (yup, I love him!)

SOHH has learned that Ludacris just signed a multi-million dollar deal with phone giant AT&T, the first hip-hop act to land such a large contract with the company.
He’ll lend his likeness to online and TV ads promoting the service and he just wrapped shooting of his first commercial.
"I had a lot a fun shooting this commercial,” Luda said. “If you like the AT&T commercials you've seen then you'll love this one."
The rapper plays a guy who doesn’t have AT&T phone service and misses an important call. The “phone,” also played by Luda, tells viewers exactly what he missed out on by not having service.
His installment in the campaign will begin running next month.
On the music front, Luda’s putting the final touches on his sixth studio project, concept album Theater of Mind, slated for an October release.
And on the big screen, the rapper/actor will star in the new Guy Ritchie movie, RocknRolla with Idris Elba and the theater adaptation of the video game Max Payne, with Mark Wahlberg. Both flicks will also be coming out in October.

VAL KILMER is happy pal HEATH LEDGER got to show off his acting talents in challenging roles before his untimely death - because now he'll be considered one of the greats. The Doors star discovered a soulmate in Ledger but always worried the "interesting and successful" roles he played never showed his true talents.
But, thanks to Brokeback Mountain and the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, the late Aussie's legacy will be spot on.Kilmer tells WENN, "I've known him for a number of years and there was a gravity to him that came up."It's tough, but when I think about him, in terms of the tragedy of his life ending, I'm happy that he got to do a couple of roles that matched what he was capable of because he always seemed to me an actor doing interesting and successful work, but he was better than some of those roles."
Former Batman Kilmer and the new Joker Ledger met up a month before the latter died from an accidental drug overdose in January (08) and Kilmer still has fond memories of their last meeting.
He recalls, "He was very proud of having quit drinking. We were in a nasty smoke-filled club and I was drinking water and Heath's like, 'Hey, you're drinking water,' and I'm like, 'Yeah, you're drinking water too,' and he was excited about drinking water.
"He said he hadn't had a drink in about a year."
Sorry to be mean, he's actually looking better.

But Lily Cole has kept her suitors guessing after going out with two of Britain's most colourful bachelors.
The supermodel, not long out of her teens, has clearly rejected youth over experience after recently stepping out with both actor Jude Law, 35, and ageing rocker Bryan Ferry, 62.
Standing in the urban equivalent of a clearing in the woods, surrounded by squat stone buildings and haloed by an enormous Kmart sign, James McAvoy looks like an extra from a production of Oliver in need of a Grande latte. It doesn't help that he's wearing a newsboy cap pulled down over his ears. Or that it's one of those Dickensian days in New York when smoke-colored clouds spray a steady shower of cold rain over the city and a layer of wet leaves clings to the back of your legs. Out in this, McAvoy is a cliché of a Scotsman. "I love this weather!" he says happily.
